About the Company

Downstate Publications is the publisher of three books: the widely acclaimed biography, Brothers Notorious: The Sheltons; a work of fiction, The Summer of '50; and the biography, Dapper & Deadly: The True Story of Black Charlie Harris.  All are written by well-known  Illinois author Taylor Pensoneau.

Brothers Notorious: The Sheltons is an exciting and fast-moving account of the lives and times of Carl, Big Earl and Bernie Shelton, legendary gangsters who were kingpins of racketeering in much of downstate Illinois from the 1920s through the late 1940s.

The Summer of '50 is Pensoneau's first work of fiction. It will keep readers in suspense as veteran reporter Jake Brosky unravels a string of murders in Southern Illinois.
Dapper & Deadly: The True Story of Black Charlie Harris recounts the lifelong journey of the last of the big-name desperadoes  from Southern Illinois. Viewed by the FBI as a lethal figure in American crime, Harris eventually landed on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list. His deadly falling out with the Shelton brothers and his involvement in sensational murders in his own neighborhood brought a reign of terror to Wayne County, Illinois.

Downstate Publications is based in the Illinois village of New Berlin, 15 miles west of Springfield.
